Four friends from out of town and I went to the Folk Fest. Since
I moved to Lowell, all of us (and in some years, just some of us) gather and
spend time at the event. Earlier in the week, I had printed the schedule and
marked a couple acts I was interested in. Then I forgot the schedule with notes
at home.

Polka with Polka Family Band. |
Lunch is involved in our Folk Fest day. We have eaten at the
festival food courts, but many times, it’s hot and we eat inside a restaurant and
enjoy the air conditioning. Lunch and beverage break spots over the years have
included El Potro Mexican restaurant, Tremonte, Warp & Weft, Fuse Bistro, and
today, our first lunch at Worthen House.
The weather was sunny
with a breeze. It was warm, but luckily not as hot and humid as some years.

Native Pride Dancers. |
At the dance pavilion tent, we heard the last few songs by
the Polish polka band then the first few from a Capo Verdean band. Both bands had the dance floor full with lively activity. I expected to see accordions and suspenders with the polka band, but they were decked out in matching abstract patterned shirts.
We walked
through the various food areas and for the second day, I resisted the allure of
the baklava sundae (too full from lunch). We saw the performance of the Native
Pride Dancers (pow wow dance tradition).
We rode the trolley, because we always
ride the trolley. The art area set up in a parking lot had some beautiful works
including those of an eleven-year-old artist.

Annual Folk Fest trolley ride. |
It was, as always, a fun day. And there is still another day
of Folk Fest tomorrow. I could go back and maybe finally explore that baklava sundae. It's another chance to catch a couple more of the acts from the schedule with the carefully plotted notes,
particularly the Kathak dancer Farah Yasmeen Shaikh.
