random thoughts – Day 1,479 – (Thursday) – crispy and blowy

The forecast for a storm delivered mixed results depending upon the area. The lights flickered a few times while I was setting up the coffee maker and staring out the window at the back yard. Our branch offices started out with a delayed opening time, but a couple regions remained closed for the day due to the local conditions.

Friends in central Mass got around seven inches. At my house, there were couple inches of a combination of snow, rain, and slush that, from the dry and warm safety of the home office, looked like a sloppy mess. I felt fortunate that it was a remote work day for me and I didn’t have to deal with being outside at all. I fired up the computer and dove right in.

Precipitation on the
office window.
Throughout the day, it rained, snowed tiny steady flakes, fluffy floaty flakes, and swirling, blowing crispy rain. At times, the problematic gutter over the front door had its special mini waterfall feature flowing, pummeling the steps and the young Bleeding Heart shoots in the flower bed below. Out back, the bright young shoots that recently emerged from the flower bed and along the fence peeked out from the snow.

The wind, which seems to have been raging forever but is probably only a few months, was howling. Small broken branches from the large tree in the yard across the street littered the street. Trees swayed wildly, and the shifting types of precipitation slammed against the office window behind me. Mother Nature’s special effects department was very busy.

Nature got quieter by the end of the workday. The wind had died down and the precipitation stopped its crispy staccato on the windowpanes.

Hot supper on
a cold night.
There was a lecture about “The History of the Ouija Board” at the library after work that I was interested in attending, but not interested enough to go out in the crappy weather to get to it.

Instead of going to the lecture, supper preparations began. Leftovers were gathered from the fridge and freezer, which was the closest I wanted to get to cold and ice.  A block of frozen spaghetti sauce; Wednesday’s leftover mushroom tortellini; roasted brussel sprouts, broccoli, chick peas and carrots that had been tossed with sauteed mushrooms and onion were combined in the saucepan and heated. Dressed with shredded cheese and Kalamata olives and dinner was served.

I love fast hot food and a warm house on a cold night, but I am a little bummed about missing the lecture. It sounded pretty cool.
