random thoughts - Day 2,041 (Saturday) - dress-up month

An event in
Worcester (2014).
October is potentially the best month, in terms of dress-up opportunities. Of course, if you are in the group of people who don't like donning costumes for events or dressing up for weddings, then it's probably less fun. Miserable, even. I used to be married to one such person. It made Halloween hard for both of us.

For many years, the costume opportunities were Halloween parties in all manner of settings. During the time with Ex1, we hosted a party at our house most years. Ex1 loved costumes and parties, but Ex2 couldn't have been less interested in costumes or even socializing if he tried.

During the many not married years, there were parties at the homes of friends and friends of friends and costumed arts organization fundraisers. Now, the main October dress-ups are Halloween event performances with the dance troupe and there are fewer house parties. That's what happens when you get older.

My costume choices have run the gamut. One year, I was a mermaid in a rented gold costume with a log blond wig and X1 was a lobster at our house party. Another guest arrived as a green mermaid and she looked better than I did, so that was a bummer. Years later, I was a mermaid again in a costume that I made and it went much better for me.

Costumes of the past have included Red Riding Hood (several times, both innocent and saucy versions), Bettie Page, a cowboy, Prince (twice), fortune teller (last minute invite, quickest I could pull together), White Witch from Narnia, disco queen, Playboy Bunny, and so many more.

I kind of miss the Halloween house party circuit life. Hopefully, someone will decide to have a party before I put away all the components dug out for the dance performances the past two weekends. It probably won't be me this year though, the house is still in chaos.
