Layers. |
It was another gray morning, and
the ride to Mom’s in Gardner required frequent use of the windshield wipers. Luckily,
the traffic was light, and the discovery of a Canadian music station on Sirius
provided a fun soundtrack, even without knowing the groups being played.
Thanks to the chill, the day’s attire
was not shorts and a the semi-patriotically themed tee shirt donned once a
year. Instead, it was jeans topped with a four-layer ensemble of blue tank top, the gray stars and stripes heart semi-patriotic tee shirt, blue dip died cotton zip front hoodie,
and a denim jacket. On the bright side, the only worry that the lemonade ice cream pie I
was bringing would melt was due to blasting the heater in the car, but it was safely packed in the thermal
packaging used by Whole Foods when delivering my ice cream and frozen
vegetables.

Fire, not fireworks. |
Instead of the traditional
cook-out with outside dining, the cooking took place outside, but the eating
was all indoors. The Memorial Day un-summery weather was a great practice run for today’s less than summery weather. During the afternoon, we
headed out to the screen house. We did not have fireworks, which are popular at many parties despite being illegal in Massachusetts, but we did have fire, because it was chilly.
The weather may not have been 100
percent, but the food and the company were. There were Tri Sum chips! And cheese
and crackers and fruit to start, followed by grilled burgers and potato and
macaroni salads. Dessert was the lemonade ice cream pie and a chocolate trifle.
It’s always fun hanging with Mom and Stepdad and Stepdad’s sister and a friend.
We were a small but lively group, and it was a great day.
